Dreamline, a brilliant discovery

I’ve read a surprising number of books these last couple of months since I rather prefer audiobooks every time. Well the thing is that I’ve begun to doubt that audiobooks are a better medium when it comes to actually memorize or focus on content because recently I read the physical copy of The 4-Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferris and I was amazed by how different it was this time compared to when I listened to it a few months back. It seems to me that bullets, indentation, italics and everything which is structurally emphasized in a paper book is completely lost when I listen to the audio version, so effectively I don’t get the point!

I’m writing about this because I missed the point Ferris is making in his book the first time around. Well at least the point which I think is the most interesting and useful and that is his “Dreamline”. It’s basically a three split short term plan, 6 or 12 months, where you are to pick a few things to:

• have
• become
• do

You then figure out the monthly costs of these things or “dreams” to calculate how much it would actually cost you to do what you dream about doing for the next few months. Ferris in fact does a better job of explaining on his website, and even better in his book. I have my 6 month dreamline hanging on the fridge and am actively pursuing each task, it’s really fun! You should try it.

Other books I’d like to recommend are;

• Rework by Jason Fried & David Heinemeier Hansson
• Your Brain at Work by David Rock

Especially Your Brain at Work as it is a really interesting read about the workings of your brain. The author David Rock does a fantastic job of explaining how your brain works by uncovering it’s limitations and by understanding the limits you’ll be able to use it much more effectively, at least it may help explain why you sometimes do some things you do. This one is definitely one of my favorites.

The “Unleash the Warrior within” book is a part of my “Getting Things Done” (GTD) process/transformation I mentioned in a previous post and I must say that I was a little disappointed by it. Perhaps my expectations were too high because I actually enjoyed reading the book and I’ve already picked out a few points which I’m going to implement as a part of my mental routine. It’s hard for me to explain what’s wrong with it, I guess I was just expecting some magic to happen and it never did. However, as with many of these guidelines, principles and methods, they are not of any use to those who don’t practice them so it remains to be seen whether this book has been useful or not. The next book in line is Your Brain at Work by David Rock which I hope will help me with my distraction issues. I’ll let you know if it’s any good.

The latest audiobooks are mostly by authors which I was unfamiliar with, well basically all of them except for my current favorite, Terry Pratchett. No that is not entirely true, I just rememberd blogging about James Rollins and his Ice Hunt book and how I was looking forward to listening to his Sigma Series. Now I’ve listened to the first book, Sandstorm, and what a disappointment! I almost gave up on it after listening to half of it but I decided to give it a chance and unfortunately the rest of the book wasn’t any better. I actually met a friend of mine a few days ago, the same one which had suggested I should try this author and he said that the series gets better and better so I’m thinking of giving James’ Sigma Series another shot.

R. A. Salvatore, Cormac McCarthy and Peter F. Hamilton on the other hand are making me wish I could put life on pause while I read all their books, twice. Considering the quantity of books, especially by Salvatore, it might take forever! Salvatore writes about human adventures in fantasy land habited by elves, dwarfs and goblins, McCarthy about violence and post-apocalyptic struggles and finally Peter F. Hamilton explores the future in his amazing Sci-Fi saga, the Commonwealth Saga. So good times ahead in the land of literature, but if you have read a book which you think I should read, please let me know, I’m always eager to read good books.

Afmæli og fleira

Það er búið að vera nóg að gera í afmælamálum þó svo að við Malla höfum misst af þeim flestum, því miður. Ýmist hafa afmælisbörnin stungið af erlendis (psst, Rafnar og Sólveig – ef þið komið ekki í heimsókn bráðum þá tek ég bara upp pakkann til ykkar sjálfur!) eða þá að við sjálf höfum þurft að fara erlendis en einna verst var að missa af þrítugsafmæli stóra brósa þann 8. febrúar. Það minnir mig á það að einungis eru 17 mánuðir í það að ég verð sjálfur þrítugur, ég tók smá æsing yfir þessu um daginn þegar Atli átti afmæli en ég spurgði hann hvort “þetta” væri bara virkilega búið en hann stappaði stálinu í litla brósa eins og góðum stóra brósa sæmir.

Á laugardaginn var okkur boðið í afmælisteiti til hennar Örnu Eiríks frænda og virðast örlögin hafa spilað eilítið inní þar því við vorum tókum dónalegt “no-show”. Á laugardagsmorguninn mætti ég **** þunnur í fótboltamót upp í Gladsaxe sem endaði með sigri DTU Daðlana sem svo endaði aftur með pizzu og fylleríi sem endaði svo á endanum með að ég bara gaf upp öndina uppí rúmi rétt rúmlega 9. Sorry Arna mín :)

Ég áttaði mig líka á því í fyrradag að þann 24. feb – í dag semsagt á ég sjálfur hljóðbókaafmæli því eitt ár er liðið frá því að ég tók ástfóstri við hlustun bóka. Þess má geta að á þessum tíma hef ég hlustað á nákvæmlega 42 bækur, en eins og flestir vita er talan 42 svarið við lífinu, alheiminum og öllu öðru. Mér finnst þetta helvíti vel af sér vikið og vona ég að næsta ár verði jafn efnilegt, reyndar er Malla stundum alveg tjúll þegar hún þarf að endurtaka sig ef ég er að hlusta á bók því ég heyri náttúrulega ekki neitt – ætli það sé ekki best að kaupa hana henni einhverja gjöf til að stilla til friðar.

Ég er náttúrulega eitthvað kexaður því ég var búinn að gleyma því að þann 21. febrúar síðastliðinn var ár liðið frá því að blog.ari.is fór í loftið eftir laaaangan svefn, ætli það sé þá ekki best að ég kaupi smá pakka handa mér í tilefni dagsins, ég elska nefnilega svona “frá mér til mín” pakka ;)

Hangir á bláþræði

Ojj, það er svo ógeðslega pirrandi að sitja fyrir framan tölvuskjáinn bara gapandi yfir næsta verkefni. Ekki það að verkefnið sé erfitt heldur að fara að setja sig inní hluti  og skrifa stutta rannsóknarritgerð á þrem dögum er erfiðara en maður heldur ef ekki snefill af áhuga er að finna. Ég er það langt leiddur núna að mér finnst skemmtilegra að opna og loka geisladrifinu í tölvunni sem ég sit við á bókasafninu í DTU en að læra og ég verð að segja að gylliboð Sverris og Rafnars um hörku djamm í kvöld eru ansi freistandi…

Ég tók mér smá pásu í gær til að ná andanum eftir síðasta verkefni og fór á net-stúfana eftir nýjum og spennandi hljóðbókum. Ég rakst á nokkra höfundi sem lofa góðu en þeir eru; David  McCullough, James Lee Burke, Stieg Larsson, Michael Shaara og Kevin J. Anderson. Á demonoid.com var svo þónokkrar bækur að finna og hef ég komið nokkrum þeirra fyrir á iPod-num mínum, reyndar er ég þegar kominn vel inní fyrstu bókina í ‘Saga of the Seven Suns’ seríunni, Hidden Empire eftir K. Anderson og líkar bara mjög vel.

Það er óhætt að segja að hljóðbækurnar haldi í mér lífinu þessa dagana því þegar ég er alveg að fara að taka tryllinginn þá halla ég mér bara aftur, set bók í gang, loka augunum og dett inn í annan heim.

Ég ætla að hætta þessu væli enda stutt í skil og endurfundi við fjölskylduna á Íslandi…
